In 2022, renewable energy represented 23.0% of energy consumed in the EU and the objective of the European Green Deal is to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The use of renewable energy has many potential benefits, including a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the diversification of energy supplies and a reduced dependency on fossil fuel markets.

No 1 – Sweden


Sweden ranks No 1 EU country using the highest share of renewable energy with a total of 66% compared to the EU average of 23%. Sweden leads among EU countries, with 66.0 % of its gross final energy consumption in 2022 derived from renewable sources. Sweden’s energy mix included hydro, wind, solid and liquid biofuels, as well as heat pumps.

Finland ranks No 2 EU country using the highest share of renewable energy with a total of 47.9% compared to the EU average of 23%.

Latvia ranks No 3 EU country using the highest share of renewable energy with a total of 43.3% compared to the EU average of 23%.

 

 

No 4 – Denmark


Denmark ranks No 4 EU country using the highest share of renewable energy with a total of 41.6% compared to the EU average of 23%.

 

 

No 5 – Estonia


Estonia ranks No 5 EU country using the highest share of renewable energy with a total of 38.5% compared to the EU average of 23%.

 

 

No 6 – Portugal


Portugal ranks No 6 EU country using the highest share of renewable energy with a total of 34.7% compared to the EU average of 23%. Portugal’s energy mix in 2022 comprised of solid biofuels, wind, hydro and heat pumps.

 

It is to be noted that Portugal’s share of energy from renewable sources as a percentage of gross electricity consumption in 2022 was 61% compared to the EU average of 40%.

Austria ranks No 7 EU country using the highest share of renewable energy with a total of 33.8% compared to the EU average of 23%.
