- Portuguese solar telescope will help find Exo-Earths
Portugal news – A Portuguese solar telescope will help find Exo-Earths by overcoming solar noise, according to the Portuguese Institute of astrophysics and space sciences (IA). A groundbreaking solar telescope developed by the Portuguese Astrophysics Centre of the University of Porto (CAUP), named the Paranal solar Espresso Telescope (PoET), will be installed at the European Southern Observatory in Chile and is expected to be operational in 2025. The innovative Portuguese telescope will help to find Exo-Earths by tackling the problem of stellar noise from a new angle that will make it possible to overcome the challenges of stellar activity. Solar noise, that is caused by radiation from the Sun due to its high temperature, greatly limits the search and characterization of other Earths in the Universe. This is why the Portuguese Astrophysics Centre developed the groundbreaking FIERCE (FInding Exo-eaRths) project that is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and involves the development and installation of the Paranal solar Espresso Telescope that will be operated remotely. The pioneering Portuguese telescope will advance comparative planetology beyond the Solar System to identify exoplanets orbiting other stars that are potentially habitable. Currently, of the nearly 5,000 known planets, as few as 5% are potentially Earth-like in terms of mass and orbital distance. The Paranal solar Espresso Telescope (PoET) is being entirely developed in Portugal, both at hardware and software levels, and will be scientifically led by the Portuguese Institute of astrophysics and space sciences (IA). This is an important milestone that will allow us to observe the Sun and inject its light into the ESPRESSO 3 spectrograph of European Southern Observatory (ESO) that has already been partially developed by the Portuguese Institute of astrophysics (IA). The Portuguese telescope will soon be able to give us access to unique data about the star at the center of the Solar System which no other telescope in the world can obtain. The results of the FIERCE project will be essential for the success of future instruments and space missions with strong Portuguese involvement, that aim to detect and characterize other Earths such as ESA's PLATO and ARIEL space missions, scheduled to launch in 2026 and 2029 respectively, and the ANDES spectrograph, scheduled to come into operation in the early 2030s, when it is installed on ESO’s largest next-generation telescope, the ELT. #portugalnews #newsportugal #spacenewsportugal #portugalspace #portugueseinstituteofastrophysics #IA #portugueseastrophysicscentreoftheuniversityofporto #CAUP #paranalsolarespressotelescope #PoET #findingexoearths #overcomingsolarnoise #FIERCE #europeanresearchcouncil #ERC #ESPRESSO3spectrograph #EuropeanSouthernObservatory #ESO #astrophysicsnewsportugal

- The OECD highlights Portugal’s tax incentives for R&D investments
Portugal news - The OECD highlights Portugal’s tax incentives for R&D investments in its “Corporate Tax Statistics” 2024 report. While R&D incentives can provide important tax support for R&D and innovation, they are also often seen as a means of attracting mobile intangible investment. From a country perspective, the preferential tax treatment for R&D investments is greatest in France followed, by Poland and Portugal. Moreover, the largest reductions in the cost of capital for R&D investments are observed in Poland, Portugal and France, which are among the jurisdictions with the lowest cost of capital estimates, since these jurisdictions provide greater tax incentives for firms to increase their R&D investment. It is to be noted that, for profitable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), implied marginal R&D tax subsidy rates were highest in Colombia, Iceland and Portugal in 2022. Foreign and domestic MNEs account for significant shares of Corporate Income Tax revenues (CIT) revenues in several jurisdictions. In Portugal, the contribution of MNEs to total Corporate Income Tax revenues (Portuguese acronym: IRC) reached 35% in 2021 according to the OECD. Among all 90 jurisdictions, eight jurisdictions have an Allowance for Corporate Equity (ACE), namely Belgium, Cyprus, Italy, Liechtenstein, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Türkiye. Including this provision in their tax code has led to an additional reduction in their Effective Average Tax Rates (EATRs) of between 0.3 to 4.5 p.p. Countries with a lower EATR usually have larger foreign investments entering the country. Comparing the patterns of tax depreciation across jurisdictions shows that the most significant effects are observed in jurisdictions with an Allowance for Corporate Equity (ACE), such as Italy, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Türkiye among others, as well as in jurisdictions with larger accelerated depreciation provisions, such as Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Portugal’s financial reporting is divided into 46 individual jurisdictions with 13,614 employees that translate the level of data disaggregation. Since the OECD implemented Country-by-Country reports (CbCRs) to combat Base Erosion and Profit Shiftings (BEPS), Portugal’s number of CbCRs now amounts to 24. #portugalnews #newsportugal #newsportugueseeconomy #economicnewsportugal #oecdreportportugal #randdportugal #OECDCorporateTaxStatistics2024report #randdincentivesportugal #CITrevenuesportugal #MNEsportugal #allowanceforcorporateequityportugal #OECD #AT
#actualitésportugal #nouvellesportugal #actualitéséconomieportugaise #actualitéséconomiquesportugal #rapportocdeportugal #incitationsfiscalesretdportugal #recettesdelimpôtsurlerevenudessociétésportugal #entreprisesmultinationalesportugal #déductionpourfondspropresportugal #OCDE #AT #rapportOCDE2024

- How to invest if you win an unexpected amount of money?
Portugal news - How to invest if you win an unexpected amount of money? A study that includes Portuguese economist Miguel Ferreira was referenced in Financial Times article “How much money do you need to quit your job?” and shows how a financial windfall affects the creation of startups. A financial windfall can come through various means such as winning the lottery, a profitable investment, a tax break, or an inheritance. However, receiving an unexpected amount of money can lead to spending it all without financial planning rather than investing in a diversified portfolio. And some people wonder how much money do they need to quit their job and how to invest if they win an unexpected amount of money? A recent study that involved Portuguese economist Miguel Ferreira with Vicente Bermejo, Rafael Zambrana, and Daniel Wolfenzon, has determined how cash windfalls affect entrepreneurship, using evidence from the Spanish Christmas lottery. The study shows that some lucky people suddenly become savvy entrepreneurs who use the money they won at the lottery to create startups, that in turn have a direct impact on the country’s real economy as key findings include increased start-up activity, job creation, and higher wages in winning provinces. The study has shown that, instead of choosing a life of leisure, some lottery winners have chosen to create a company, leading not only to job creation but also to profitable startups. So, if you win an unexpected amount of money, you could follow the Iberian model and become the founder of a profitable startup. #portugalnews #newsportugal #investmentnewsportugal #startupnewsportugal #MiguelFerreira #FinancialTimes
