The consortium developing the European version of ChatGPT started the project on February 1st, 2025, with funding from the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme.   Europe's leading AI companies and research institutions are combining their expertise to develop next-generation open-source language models in an unprecedented collaboration to advance European AI capabilities. A Dutch LLM aims at fostering a supportive ecosystem involving academic institutions, companies, and government and it is a language model based on Dutch law.    With GPT-NL, the Netherlands has its own language model starting in 2025. The Dutch LLM project was developed in collaboration with TNO, SURF and the Netherlands Forensic Institute, with the aim of safeguarding the digital sovereignty of the Netherlands, since it is a language model for more sensitive documents, such as government information, police reports or health insurance documents, and it ensures that no “backdoor” is built into GPT-NL that would allows people to look in, and the AVG, for example, is strictly adhered to.   The Dutch LLM was developed in collaboration with supercomputer company SURF, among others.     6 – Sweden   The name of the Swedish version of LLM ChatGPT is GPT-SW3 and it was launched on December 1st, 2023.   Swedish LLM GPT-SW3 is built on massive amounts of Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic and English text data with the explicit purpose of being able to generate Swedish and Nordic languages texts.   The Swedish large-scale generative language model was developed for Nordic languages by AI Sweden in collaboration with RISE and the WASP WARA for Media and Language.
