Investment News Europe - 60% of European billionaires plan to relocate their wealth, according to the Global Family Office Report 2026 by UBS published on May 28th 2026.
60% of European billionaires, excluding Switzerland, with an average wealth of USD 2.7 billion per family plan to relocate their family office within the next 12 months, that is the highest percentage in the last seven years.
Why are billionaires relocating their wealth in 2026?
The main reasons cited for relocating the family offices of High net worth individuals are geopolitical conflict and the erosion of confidence in the US dollar, with 65% of family offices expecting the dollar's role as the world's reserve currency to weaken over the next year, and 47% say they are overexposed to the US currency.
Where are billionaires investing in 2026?
Europeans billionaires want to reduce their dependence on the US assets and are shifting their investments towards countries in Western Europe and Asia-Pacific that have developed market equities and bonds which represent 41% of their investments. While gold accounted for 2% of portfolios of HNWI in 2025, the UBS report reveals that family offices plan to raise that figure to 3% since gold reduces exposure to the US dollar. Moreover, 88% of family offices hold assets in two or more jurisdictions in a multishoring strategy that limits dependence on a single market.
Family office portfolios of billionaires are split almost halfway between traditional assets, such as stocks and bonds, and alternative assets, such as real estate, private equity, and infrastructure. It is to be noted that the Swiss franc and the euro are emerging as the preferred investment alternatives for family offices of billionaires.
