Portugal is becoming a haven for dolphins, with the youngest one born in July 2025 and named Bravo. The dolphin pod is located in Portugal’s Sado Estuary nature reserve in Setúbal that is south of Lisbon.
Bottlenose dolphins have a grey back, a lighter belly area, and a pronounced beak. They can reach about four meters in length and weigh 800 kilograms. They feed on fish, cuttlefish, squid, octopus, and on the Atlantic croaker fish that is also returning to the region.
While dolphins live around 50 years, the population of bottlenose dolphins residing in Portugal’s Sado estuary is unique in the country and one of only three known in all of Europe.
