What is the meaning of Portugal Day?
Portugal Day, that is officially called ¨Portugal, Camões, and Portuguese Communities Day¨, is the Portugal National Day and it is celebrated yearly on June 10th. Portugal Day (Dia de Portugal) commemorates the death of Luís de Camões, Portugal´s national literary icon, on June 10th, 1580.
Camões wrote Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads), that is Portugal's national epic poem celebrating Portuguese history and achievements, namely 15th-century Portuguese explorations that brought fame and fortune to the country. The poem, that is considered one of the finest and most important works in Portuguese literature, became a symbol for the great feats of the Portuguese Empire.
