Investment News Europe - Lufthansa Group will invest 309 million euros in Portugal through Lufthansa Technik, the German group's aircraft maintenance company.
Portugal as a global hub for aircraft maintenance
Lufthansa Group has chosen Portugal as a global hub for aircraft maintenance with aircraft components to be repaired that will arrive from all over the world and is expected to begin operations in 2028.
Lufthansa Technik clients include Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), aircraft leasing companies, private jet operators, armed forces, and airlines. With revenues of 8,049 million euros in 2025 and an annual growth rate of 12%, the aircraft maintenance sector is expected to be a high growth industry.
Lufthansa Technik will build a new aircraft component and engine maintenance unit in the Porto metropolitan area. The new plant will be built on land covering 230,000 m2 with a plant that will be 48,753 m2 with four floors and a capacity to process 30 tons of components per day.
Portugal’s budding Aviation Industry
Portugal has the capacity to become a strategic partner in the aviation sector according to the CEO of Lufthansa Technik, Carsten Spohr.
This is why Lufthansa Group is currently evaluating the possibility of establishing a flight school in Portugal that could collaborate with the Portuguese Air Force. In Europe, Lufthansa Group's aviation school, the European Flight Academy, has training centers in Germany and Switzerland.
Lufthansa Group believes in the potential of Portugal aviation industry and intends to submit a proposal to the Portuguese Government by April 7th for the acquisition of 49.9% of Portugal’s airline TAP, with 5% to be reserved for employees.
According to the CEO of Lufthansa Technik, Carsten Spohr, TAP airline would be a perfect fit for the Lufthansa Group, since it would be an important complement for the Brazilian market and to increase their presence in Latin America.
Lufthansa Technik AG again generated earnings of more than 600 million euros in the 2025 financial year, laying the foundation for further extensive investments in the future.
