Pharmaceutical News Europe - Pharmaceutical company Hovione is investing 200 million euros in Portugal for a new manufacturing plant in the district of Setúbal.

Pharmaceutical company Hovione, that was founded in Portugal in 1959, is a multinational with four FDA inspected sites located in the United States, Portugal, Ireland and China, with at least one in ten drugs approved by the US regulator being produced by Hovione for its pharmaceutical clients.

With headquarters in the United States, Hovione helps partners turn scientific innovation into medicines through the development and manufacture of drug substances, intermediates and drug products across the full life cycle. Hovione is globally recognized for its specialized technologies such as Spray Drying and Continuous Tableting.

With its new manufacturing unit expected to start operations in September 2027, Hovione will have two manufacturing plants in Portugal, both located in the Lisbon metropolitan area.

The new Hovione manufacturing plant, that is set to open in the second half of 2027, will be located in Seixal, Setúbal, as it is close to an airport and most of the pharmaceutical company´s production is exported, mostly towards the United States.

“Our clients are international, we export all of our production, and we wanted to be close to a center where we could export and easily receive visitors” - Marco Gil,  co-CEO Hovione.

Hovione´s new manufacturing plant in Portugal will counter disruptions in the international supply chain while strengthening Europe´s production capacity in the pharmaceutical sector.

Portugal is Hovione´s main industrial, scientific and technological center within a global network that is comprised of 19 of the 20 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.
