Green News Europe - Portugal launches a 4,000 euros support for individuals to puchase an Electric Vehicle and applications for light electric passenger vehicles must be made between June 11 - July 27, 2026 until the 10 million euros fund is exhausted. Here is the list of supported EVs and the requirements to benefit from the incentives:

Portugal´s 4,000 euros support for individuals to puchase an electric vehicle is integrated into the Green Mobility package and aims to support the decarbonization of the transport sector that is responsible for the largest share of carbon emissions in Portugal. It promotes the electrification of car fleets, contributing to the reduction of the average age of Portugal´s car fleet and to the improvement of road safety and environmental quality, while encouraging the use of more sustainable modes of mobility.

Here is the list of incentives for purchasing Electric Vehicles (EVs) including bikes & motorcycles in Portugal:

1 - Light electric passenger vehicles

Light electric passenger vehicles can benefit from a 4,000 euros support for individuals to puchase an electric vehicle.

The support will have a retroactive effect from January 1, 2025, also covering acquisitions already made since that date provided they were purchased new.

Electric vehicle chargers in multi-family condominiums can benefit from an incentive of 80% of the charger purchase price up to 800 euros for one parking space, plus an additional 80% of the electrical installation cost of up to 1,000 euros per parking space.

2 - Electric bicycles

Electric bicycles are eligible for incentives between €500 and €1,500. The incentive covers 50% of the purchase price (including VAT), up to a maximum of 750 euros for electric bicycles.

3 -  Electric motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles and quadricycles

Electric motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles and quadricycles are eligible for an incentive of 50% of the purchase price (including VAT), up to a maximum of 1,500 euros.

Here are the requirements to benefit from Portugal´s incentive to purchase an Electric Vehicle:

1 - The main requirement to benefit from Portugal´s incentive to purchase an Electric Vehicle is to scrap a fossil fuel-powered vehicle older than 10 years.

2 - There is a purchase price limit of 38,500 euros (including VAT and associated expenses); or 55,000 euros for vehicles with more than five seats.

3 - After the application to purchase an Electric Vehicle is approved, the beneficiary has 3 months to purchase the vehicle – if the vehicle is not yet purchased – and has to submit the required documents, namely proof of scrapping a vehicle older than 10 years, and use the form available on the Environmental Fund website.
