Defence News Europe - Portuguese Unicorn Tekever confirms the acquisition of a British airport through the acquisition of the airport infrastructure of West Wales Airport.
The acquisition of the British airport of West Wales by Portuguese drone company Tekever is part of a five-year investment plan to invest 400 million pounds sterling under the Overmatch program to supply drones to the Royal Airforce (RAF).
The acquisition of West Wales airport will give Tekever access to 6,300 square kilometers of restricted airspace over land and sea, according to Ricardo Mendes, Co-Founder & CEO at Tekever. The airport has already enabled Tekever to produce the full lifecycle of the AR3 drone in the UK including test flights for clients such as the UK Home Office and the Royal Navy.
West Wales Airport will become a hub for testing Tekever drones for UK Defence. The Welsh Government Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning considers Portuguese drone company Tekever to be "one of Europe's leading and fastest-growing companies in the unmanned aerial systems sector."
The acquisition of West Wales Airport by Tekever supports its ambitious expansion plans and will provide significant benefits to the UK national Defense ecosystem and the regional economy of central and west Wales.
Portuguese Unicorn Tekever, which specializes in AI drones, chose to acquire the Welsh airport since it has a “world-class” unmanned aerial vehicle (UAS) flight environment and is a “key hub” for testing and evaluating drones.
With this new acquisition, Portuguese Unicorn Tekever will provide a competitive advantage to the armed forces of the United Kingdom and NATO through autonomous and AI-based technology.
