Travel and Tourism News Europe - The European Commission launches the single rail ticket to travel across Europe, according to an announcement made on May 13, 2026. Here is what is Europe´s new single rail ticket and what happens if a holder of Europe´s single rail ticket misses a connection:
¨One journey, one ticket¨ is the new way to travel by rail across Europe.
Seamless travel across Europe will soon become a reality. Europe´s new single rail ticket simplifies planning and booking for regional, long-distance and cross-border travel, particularly for rail journeys involving multiple operators.
What is Europe´s new single rail ticket?
People who want to travel across Europe by rail will be able to find, compare and purchase services combined from different rail operators into one single ticket, which can be bought in one transaction on a ticketing platform of their choice. This can be an independent platform, or the rail operator's ticketing service.
¨Freedom of movement is one of Europe’s greatest achievements. Today, we are taking it a step further by making travel across all 27 Member States simpler, smarter and more passenger friendly. With digital tools and integrated mobility services, Europeans will be able at the click of one button to plan, compare and purchase multimodal journeys across borders, while benefiting from stronger rail passenger rights, greater transparency and better protection every step of the way,¨ stated Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism.
What happens if a holder of Europe´s single rail ticket misses a connection?
If a holder of Europe´s single rail ticket misses a connection during multi-operator rail journeys, passengers with a single ticket will benefit from new, full passenger rights protection, including assistance, rerouting, reimbursement and compensation.
