News Economy Europe – Here are the Top 10 EU countries where tourism brings the highest external revenues and their share of GDP, according to a new report by Eurostat and Bank of Portugal:
While tourism exports from EU countries totaled 28 billion euros in 2024, Spain topped the list with the highest external revenues from the Tourism sector with 98.4 billion euros, however it represents only 6.2% of Spain’s GDP.
Top 10 EU countries where tourism brings the highest external revenues and their share of GDP:
1 – Spain
Spain ranks No. 1 EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 98.4 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Spain as a share of GDP amounting to 6.2% in 2024.
2 – France
France ranks 2nd EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 71.1 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from France as a share of GDP amounting to only 2.4% in 2024.
3 – Italy
Italy ranks 3rd EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 54.2 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Italy as a share of GDP amounting to only 2.5% in 2024.
4 – Germany
Germany ranks 4th EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 37.1 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Germany as a share of GDP amounting to only 0.9% in 2024.
This makes Germany the EU country that is the least dependent on tourism as a share of GDP.
5 – Portugal
Portugal ranks 5th EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 27.7 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Portugal as a share of GDP amounting to 9.7% in 2024.
This makes Portugal the EU country the most dependent on tourism as a share of GDP, after Croatia, Malta and Cyprus.
6 – Austria
Austria ranks 6th EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 24.3 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Austria as a share of GDP amounting to 5% in 2024.
7 – Netherlands
The Netherlands ranks 7th EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 21.9 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Netherlands as a share of GDP amounting to only 1.9% in 2024.
8 – Greece
Greece ranks 8th EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 21.6 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Greece as a share of GDP amounting to 9.1% in 2024.
9 – Croatia
Croatia ranks 9th EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 15 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Croatia as a share of GDP amounting to 17.5% in 2024.
This makes Croatia the EU country that is the most dependent on tourism as a share of GDP.
10 – Poland
Poland ranks 10th EU country where tourism brings the highest external revenues, with tourism exports reaching 13 billion euros in 2024. This represents tourism exports from Poland as a share of GDP amounting to only 1.6% in 2024.
