While Portugal’s capital intensity, measured as the ratio of capital per hour worked, has been consistently lower in Portugal than in the euro area, the difference is particularly noticeable in the manufacturing sector.

Capital intensity refers to the proportion of capital used in the production process (such as machinery, equipment, intellectual property products, and infrastructure) compared to the labor input. In Portugal’s manufacturing sector, the difference is marked in terms of gross value added or real wages per hour worked.
