Business News Europe - Here is when Uber will launch self-driving cars in Europe, as well as the list of automotive companies that are preparing to launch AI autonomous driving in Europe with the planned dates for deployment across the continent:
When will Uber launch self-driving cars in Europe?
Uber will launch self-driving cars in Europe after the test phase in London that is planned for Summer 2026, since London is one of Europe´s most complex driving environments. Londoners can now join the interest list for autonomous rides on Uber, before its commercial deployment on the streets of London. The UK will thus be leading in AI-enabled mobility globally, while supporting the next generation of automotive manufacturing.
Uber self-driving cars will use Wayve technology and tests are already being carried across Europe, preparing to scale autonomous mobility on the continent.
The EU AI Act regulates the automotive sector and AI autonomous driving following a risk-based approach. The EU AI Act was revised in February 2025 to provide a list of prohibited AI practices and obligations for the automotive industry. The EU AI provision for high-risk AI automotive systems embedded into vehicles will enter into force in August 2, 2028, paving the way for safe self-driving cars in Europe.
What are the Uber self-driving cars that will be launched in Europe?
The Uber self-driving cars that will be launched in Europe are the result of a cooperation with Wayve autonomous rides, a British company that founded in 2017.
Wayve has pioneered an end-to-end AI approach to autonomous driving that is faster to deploy, more flexible by design and built to scale. Through embodied AI, the British autotech company delivers all levels of autonomy, from hands-off and eyes-off driving, to robotaxis.
Wayve is the first and only Autonomous Vehicle company to test a single global AI Driver model across more than 500 cities in Europe, North America and Japan.
What are the automotive companies that will launch self-driving cars in Europe?
While Uber will launch self-driving cars in Europe after the test phase in London in the Summer of 2026, Stellantis will launch its first self-driving cars using British tech company Wayve in North America in 2028 before its future deployment in Europe. Stellantis is a leading global car manufacturer that includes car brands such as Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, FIAT, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, Vauxhall, Free2move and Leasys.
Other automotive companies launching self-driving cars in Europe using Wayve technology include Nissan Motor Corporation and Mercedes-Benz AG.
Tesla is testing its Full Self-Driving software in five EU countries, namely Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Lithuania, and Estonia. The EU-wide rollout of Tesla´s self-driving cars is planned for Q1 2027.
