Here are the European countries that were the most affected by fires in Summer 2026:
Fires affected large areas of Europe and North Africa during the summer of 2026, with extensive burnt areas across the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, Italy, Greece, the Balkans, Ukraine, and Algeria.
The above image shows data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), that is part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, and shows fires larger than 30 hectares between July 1st - August 31st, 2026.
Across the areas the most affected by fires in Summer 2026, more than 1.2 million hectares have been identified as affected. The circles in the image above highlight larger burnt areas, including those associated with 19 fires, each exceeding 10,000 ha. Smaller burnt areas are shown as orange polygons.
