Portugal news – Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona is creating a Tech Hub in Porto. With an IT team that includes more than 1,000 professionals, Mercadona is recruiting a team of tech experts for its new Porto Tech Hub that is part of Mercadona IT Team.   Mercadona’s Tech Hub in Porto will focus on the digitalization and reengineering of the more than 300 internal systems and applications used in the chain's more than 1,600 supermarkets in Portugal and Spain, as well as in its 17 logistics clusters.   The new tech jobs available in Mercadona’s Tech Hub in Portugal include positions such as Java Back Developer professionals, specialists in areas such as software development and architecture, cybersecurity, DevOps, data management, product management, product designers, cloud, IT infrastructure or UX/UI design.   Since Mercadona opened its first supermarket in Portugal in 2019 in Porto, the Spanish conglomerate has already invested 1 billion euros in Portugal where it created nearly 6,000 new jobs. Portugal news - Portuguese fan engagement tech startup PluggableAI raises 1.75 million euros in a seed round led by the GED Tech Seed fund managed by GED Ventures, with the participation of Portugal Ventures.   This new investment follows a pre-seed round of 100,000 euros under the INNOV-ID Call in 2022, which makes the total amount already raised by PluggableAI reach 1.850 million euros.   PluggableAI, that is incubated at Startup Braga, uses push notification systems powered by non-intrusive AI to infer when to engage with smartphone users.  The startup developed the Fan Meter technology, which uses AI and sensors to create engagement strategies such as “Fan of the Match” or “The Festival Lover”, tools already used by “Sporting Clube de Braga” to reward its fans. The Portuguese tech startup provides fan engagement technologies that are used in events such as Rock In Rio, with interactive experiences and rewards for festival-goers.   The new investment round will enable the startup to accelerate its internationalization process with a focus on Europe and the Middle East, through partnerships with sports organizations and festivals, as well as through innovations for television programs.   The tech startup is actively recruiting for tech positions for jobs in AI, mobile and full stack, as well as in the fields of business consultancy, sales and growth. Portugal news - Portugal steps into the future by launching Digital Commercial Neighborhoods for the digital transformation of entire physical areas all across the country.   Portugal’s visionary plan to transform physical commercial areas into digital marketplaces is impressive, with a masterplan to create 50 Digital Commercial Neighborhoods in Portugal by the end of 2025.  These Digital Commercial Neighborhoods will include areas with a high density of commercial spaces that will be managed centrally through the use of advanced digital technology.   The highlights of Portugal’s project to revolutionize the commercial sector include the creation and promotion of local marketplaces or integration of companies in existing marketplaces, as well as the creation of common logistics solutions such as delivery systems, dark stores or click and collect points.   The digital transformation of Portugal’s physical commercial districts into digital marketplaces will be made possible by the allocation of EU PRR funds amounting to 52,500,000 euros under IAPMEI.   Coimbra in Central Portugal has just launched the first phase of its Digital Commercial Neighborhood at Casa do Bairro, where the project will be implemented with an investment of 1,236 million euros, the third largest amount at national level.   Coimbra’s new digital marketplace, the @BaixaCoimbra project, should be implemented by the end of 2025 and foresees the use of digital tools to generate a new way of relating between traders, consumers and public spaces, via the creation of a common visual identity. Portugal news - Portuguese aviation uniforms company SKYPRO expands to the Middle East with contracts worth 1.3 million euros.   Uniforms made in Portugal for aviation professionals guarantee the excellence that symbolizes airline brands and SKYPRO has just won three contracts worth 1.3 million euros to provide footwear for cabin crew, pilots and ground staff for Royal Jordanian Airlines, Air Arabia and FlyDubai.      SKYPRO’s main clients are Emirates, NetJets, Norse Atlantic Airways and Royal Air Maroc. The company, that is already supplying uniforms for Emirates pilots and around 80,000 pairs of shoes to Qatar Airways yearly, is increasing its foothold in the Middle East.   The Portuguese airline uniforms manufacturer has an office in Dubai since 2022, that allows SKYPRO to access to more tenders in the region. However, the Portuguese uniforms company aims to provide footwear for crews all over the world, starting with offices in Germany and France in 2025 since these are the markets that have companies with more than a thousand employees.   SKYPRO was responsible for the first shoe in the world certified for the aviation industry, and is currently a reference product for airlines, according to Jorge Pinto, the founder of Skypro.   Portuguese textile and footwear company Skypro produces more than 130,000 pairs of shoes and half a million items of clothing annually for more than 40 customers. Portugal news - From what US states do American tourists in Portugal come from?   The US is close to becoming Portugal’s No 1 source market for tourism  and is about to overtake the United Kingdom as Portugal’s No 1 tourist market.  Portugal received over 1 million American tourists just for the first half of 2024, that is a 15% increase in the number of tourists from the US compared to the same period the previous year.   The number of American tourists in Portugal has almost doubled in the space of two years, rising from 584,700 in the first half of 2022 to over a million tourists and the US already ranks Number 1 market for tourism in Lisbon .   A new study from InsureMyTrip, that ranks the most popular international destinations by US state, shows from what US state most American tourists in Portugal come from.  Results are based on all travel insurance purchases for international trips departing in 2024.     While American tourists from about 60% of US states favor Mexico as their top destination and Italy remains a popular tourist destination for 2024 for Americans from most states; Portugal is quickly becoming a favorite tourist destination for Americans. Portugal news – Porto’s public health unit, “Unidade Local de Saúde de Santo António” just won the Gold Mastercard Award for Hospital Operational Excellence by the International Hospital Federation IHF Awards 2024.   Porto’s public health unit, “Unidade Local de Saúde de Santo António” presented the iBird project that won the Gold Award in the category Mastercard Award for Hospital Operational Excellence. This project integrates robotics with artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to transform health service delivery and academic education.   The Mastercard Award for Hospital Operational Excellence, that is an international award acknowledging measurable success in operational outcomes and efficiencies, recognizes the quality of Portugal's public health care. Porto’s Santo António Local Health Unit (ULS de Santo António) is a local health unit of Portugal’s National Health Service, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors is Paulo Jorge Barbosa Carvalho.      The Santo António Local Health Unit consists of the hospital units of the Hospital de Santo António, including the Integrated Ambulatory Surgery Center, the Maternal and Child Center of the North and the Hospital Magalhães Lemos.
