Portugal Green Hydrogen news – The Green Hydrogen project in Portugal, Galileu Green H2 Valley, won an award at the COP28 meeting.

The Green Hydrogen project in Portugal obtained the Low-Carbon Hydrogen award at the COP28 meeting. The Galileu Green H2 Valley project will support decarbonizing the cement and the aviation industry in Portugal.

The COP28 Energy Transition Day, on December 5th, 2023, included awards for game-changing innovative solutions worldwide. Swiss investment company Smartenergy is one of the companies that won the Energy Transition Changemakers Award. The award recognizes the ground-breaking work in the Galileu Green H2 Valley in Portugal that will produce sustainable hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels (eSAF) to support decarbonizing the cement and aviation sectors.

Green hydrogen will first be produced through a 360MW electrolizer in Vila Franca de Xira that is in the municipality of Lisbon. However, Smartenergy’s eSAF projects in Portugal will be based in Lisbon, Aveiro, and Porto, and the three projects are expected to have a combined production of more than 300k t of eSAF per year.

“By implementing its realistic set-up, the model shaped by the Galileu Green H2 Valley helps net-zero the cement-intensive industry, which is responsible for around 8% of global CO2 emissions, and helps decarbonize the aviation industry, which is responsible for around 2.5% of global CO2 emissions,” stated Andrès Isaza, Chief Commercial Officer at Smartenergy.

Portugal is spearheading the energy transition in Europe through green hydrogen and different sources of renewable energy, including the largest floating PV project in Europe. The success of Portugal’s renewable energy sector was demonstrated at the beginning of November 2023, when the country met its domestic and industrial energy needs for almost a week using only solar and wind power, and exported its surplus to Spain.
