Portugal news - Lisbon becomes the global hub for IoT Satellites launched by Space X Falcon 9 rockets, including Spanish FOSSASat nanosatellites, as well as Portuguese PoSAT-2 and PROMETHEUS-1 satellites.
Â
Spanish FOSSA Systems is opening its global hub for IOT devices for satellites in Portugal on the 14th, that is also SpaceX launch day for three new FOSSASat nanosatellites by Falcon 9 rockets, together with Portuguese satellites PoSAT-2 developed by LusoSpace and PROMETHEUS-1 by the University of Minho.
Â
Portuguese satellite constellation PoSAT-2 is the first of a constellation of 12 microsatellites costing around one million euros, that will be positioned in a low orbit at approximately 500 kilometers above the International Space Station to monitor maritime traffic. Portuguese satellite project PoSAT-2 is partly funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan. It has a total budget of €20 million and the launch of the remaining 11 satellites is expected by the end of 2025.
Â
Portuguese satellite PROMETHEUS-1, that was developed by the University of Minho (UMinho), measures five centimeters on each side and weighs 250 grams. The small black cube carries guidance systems, a battery and a camera similar to that of a mobile phone, which will allow it to capture images and evaluate the performance of software and hardware in space.
Â
Spanish satellite company FOSSA Systems chose Lisbon as their new global hub for the development of IoT devices for satellite connectivity as one of the pillars of the company's technology strategy:
Â
"FOSSA is the only European company that vertically integrates the entire design, development, manufacturing and operation of IoT satellites. In this context, Portugal is the core of our global R&D development and our range of IoT devices," highlighted the CEO Julián Fernández.
Â
FOSSA Systems expects to have a constellation of 80 satellites in the coming years, which will offer real-time connectivity across the planet with the goal being to lead in Europe and, later, globally, in IoT connectivity solutions via satellites. The opening of the first branch outside Spain marks the beginning of the commercial phase of FOSSA Systems, which recorded a 500% growth in revenue in 2024 and intends to maintain this growth trend in 2025.
