What is the Brotherhood of Queen Saint Elizabeth (Confraria da Rainha Santa Isabel)?

The Brotherhood of Queen Saint Elizabeth (Confraria da Rainha Santa Isabel) is devoted to the life and miracles of Queen Saint Elizabeth, who was the wife of the Catholic King D. Dinis sixth of Portugal.

Queen Saint Elizabeth was a descendant of the Royal House of Aragon and is believed to be born on February 11, 1270, in Zaragoza, that is the capital of northeastern Spain's Aragon region. Following her marriage to King Dinis, who was the sixth King of Portugal (1261-1325), Dona Isabel became the Queen of Portugal.

Queen Saint Elizabeth moved to the city of Coimbra in October 1282, where she carried out many charitable practices accompanied by prodigious miracles, including the legend of the transformation of bread into roses. She died at the age of sixty-six, on the 4th of July 1336, and was buried in Coimbra.

Following the beatification of Queen Saint Elizabeth (Rainha Santa Isabel) by the Brief of Pope Leo X, dated April 15th, 1516, King João III and his wife Queen D. Catarina, created the Brotherhood of Queen Saint Elizabeth (Confraria da Rainha Santa Isabel). In order for the new institution to obtain full canonical regularity, the Abbess of the Monastery, D. Ana de Meneses, obtained confirmation of the statutes from the Bishop of the diocese. Queen Saint Elizabeth was canonized in 1625, by Pope Urban VIII.

The Brotherhood of Queen Saint Elizabeth (Confraria da Rainha Santa Isabel) establishes two stewards to govern the Brotherhood, one of them being the most honorable in the city and the other a student. This is so that the body of the University and the city share equal devotion and charity, without division, for the good of the Holy Brotherhood.

The commitment to the Brotherhood of Queen Saint Elizabeth (Confraria da Rainha Santa Isabel) includes liturgical acts and a holy day that involves, in even years, processions with the Image throughout the City of Coimbra to the temple of Santa Clara-a-Nova.
