Pool Pumps and Sand Filters: A Maintenance Guide for Pool Operators in Spain and the EU - Portugal Business News

The off-season is when pool equipment either gets looked after or gets forgotten. For hotels, residential complexes, clubs and private pool owners across Spain and the EU, the months between autumn and spring are the best time to check the two parts that keep a pool running: the pool pump and the sand filter. COREX Pool Products, a Spain-based pool equipment brand and registered EU trade mark, explains what to check and how to choose replacement equipment that is easier to maintain.

Why the Pool Pump Matters Most:

The pool pump moves water through the filter and back into the pool. If it struggles, the whole system struggles. Water circulates less, the filter works less effectively and the motor runs harder than it should. One of the most common causes is simple: a strainer basket full of leaves and debris.

On many pool pumps, checking the strainer basket means opening the lid. Because that takes time, it is often skipped until a problem shows. This is why COREX designed its Max Flow Pool Pump with a large strainer basket under a clear lid. Anyone looking after the pool can see when the basket needs emptying at a glance, without tools and without opening the pump.

Off-Season Pool Maintenance Checklist:

Before the next swimming season, pool operators should:

  • Empty and inspect the pump strainer basket, and check the lid seal for wear.

  • Backwash the sand filter and check the pressure gauge against its normal clean reading.

  • Inspect seals, unions and valves for leaks, and replace worn parts now rather than in July.

  • Check that the pump motor runs quietly and smoothly, without unusual heat or noise.

  • Review whether ageing equipment should be replaced before demand peaks in spring.

How Sand Filters Keep Pool Water Clear:

A sand filter traps dirt and fine particles as water passes through a bed of filter sand. Over time, trapped dirt builds up and the pressure inside the filter rises. Backwashing reverses the flow and flushes that dirt out. When the filter is looked after this way, it keeps pool water clear with little effort.

COREX Euro Sand Filters are built to European standards for private and commercial pools, with a multiport valve that makes backwashing and rinsing straightforward.

Choosing Pool Equipment Built to European Standards:

When replacing a pool pump or sand filter, operators and installers should look beyond price. Important questions include:

  • Is the equipment built to European standards?

  • Is it easy to inspect and maintain day to day?

  • Are spare parts and support available from a supplier within the EU?

  • Is the pump correctly matched to the filter and the pool volume?

For developers and MEP consultants specifying equipment for new projects, choosing one brand for pumps, filters and accessories also makes installation and future maintenance simpler.
