Portugal invests 75 million euros to support ocean observation
Environment News Europe - Portugal announced an investment of 75 million euros for the European project aimed at supporting ocean observation, at the meeting of the International OceanEye Alliance: Together Stronger for Ocean Observation, in New York:
Portugal´s investment to support Ocean Observation is part of the project promoted by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The International OceanEye Alliance meeting was held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, that brought together world leaders to discuss the protection of the oceans.
“What brings us together today is more than just a concern for our oceans or our planet; it is a profound sense of responsibility,” - Portugal´s Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, at the meeting of the International OceanEye Alliance: Together Stronger for Ocean Observation, in New York.
Portugal´s Prime Minister stressed that “as a maritime nation”, with a vast Exclusive Economic Zone and an extensive network of Marine Protected Areas in the North Atlantic, Portugal “is at the forefront” of global action for the oceans stating: “we have long understood that our future is intrinsically linked to the oceans”.
According to Portugal´s Prime Minister, “the Alliance that we are strengthening today will be essential to ensure that ocean observation is supported by an adequate governance structure and a financially sustainable system.”
Portugal´s Prime Minister assured a national contribution of 75 million euros to support ocean observation and the objectives of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).
