Defence News Europe - Portugal`s Navy will receive a drone carrier worth 132 million euros in April 2027, that is the first European multi-platform drone carrier:
What is Portugal´s drone carrier NRP D. João II?
Portugal´s future multi-platform drone carrier, the NRP D. João II, that is being built by Damen Shipyards Group in Romania, will be unique in Europe.
Portuguese drone carrier D. João II, that will have a total length of 107.6 meters, will be a multi-platform carrier since it will be able to carry aerial, land, and submarine unmanned vehicles and it will also include advanced Defence capabilities.
The drone carrier will not only be used for scientific missions such as data collection and processing, but it will also be used for security missions including for disasters, for the surveillance of Portugal´s marine area that spans around 4 million square kilometers and is the largest globally, for the evacuation of citizens from dangerous or conflict zones, as well as for strengthening the surveillance of submarine cables.
Portugal will also receive heavy military equipment worth 5.8 billion euros under the EU SAFE (Security Action for Europe) fund.
