What is Portugal´s Voluntary Carbon Market?
Portugal´s Voluntary Carbon Market includes economic incentives, namely 3 methodologies that aim to attract projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or capture carbon from the atmosphere (carbon sequestration).
“We are creating conditions so that more landowners, entities, and companies can invest in forests and climate action. By expanding the available methodologies, we reinforce the credibility and growth capacity of the Voluntary Carbon Market” - Portugal´s Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho.
Portugal´s new methodologies allow for a more diverse range of forestry interventions and encourage sustainable management practices that contribute to climate, environmental, and territorial benefits through market solutions.
Portugal´s Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) allows individuals and organizations to buy and sell carbon credits voluntarily, creating economic incentives for implementing projects to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or sequester carbon. These projects can generate, in addition to climate benefits, environmental and socioeconomic co-benefits, such as the protection of biodiversity and natural capital, and increased territorial resilience.
