Green News Europe - Portugal has the only lithium battery recycling plant in Western Europe, that was built under the 168.14 million euros New Generation Storage project that is funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and that is led by Portuguese company DST Group. Here are the main goals of Portugal´s New Generation Storage project:

What is Portugal´s New Generation Storage (NGS) project?

Portugal´s New Generation Storage (NGS) project brings together a highly qualified multidisciplinary consortium with relevant knowledge and experience in various areas related to the battery industry. The project comprises 47 entities – 23 companies and 24 ENESII (Environmental, Energy and Social Security) companies.

Portugal´s New Generation Storage project is led by DST Solar, whose know-how and experience are crucial to leading the consortium and realizing its main goals. B. again, that is part of Portuguese DST group, is the only lithium battery recycling plant in the Iberian Peninsula, positioning itself in a critical area at the European level.

Portugal´s New Generation Storage Innovation Pact brings together 47 partners working to develop a complete and fully circular battery ecosystem in the country. The consortium aims to structurally transform the national ecosystem of the battery industry, creating the necessary conditions - at the technological and human resources level - from the development of innovative technologies to end-of-term management life of batteries, contributing to the implementation of a complete value chain, in order to position Portugal as a worldwide  reference in the battery recycling sector.

Portugal´s New Generation Storage project aim to develop 21 technologically innovative Products, Processes or Services (PPS) with an impact across the entire battery value chain.

Here are the main goals of Portugal´s New Generation Storage project:

1 - Sustainable Technology for Lithium Refining

2 - Predictive platform based on Machine Learning

3 - New reconversion process for the valorization of HCI by-products with a view to LiCI production.

4 - New processes for the pilot production of innovative batteries, using different technologies, such as: flexible batteries, thin-film solid-state batteries, and structural batteries.

5 - New service for laboratory testing and validation of newly developed cathodic solutions.

6 - New disruptive housings for prismatic and cylindrical cells

7 - New processes for battery testing and certification.

8 - New technology for fast charging of battery packs.

9 - Modular energy management system

10 - New sustainable processes for recycling lithium-ion batteries.

11 - New industrial processes and services for second-life battery applications.

12 - New training and capacity-building modules in the battery sector.

13 - New Generation Storage (NGS) Platform and Collaborative Network

14 - Digital systems for energy management

15 - Technological validation of an integrated electrochemical process for the production of LiOH monohydrate (LHM) from recycled lithium carbonate sources.

16 - Validation of greenhouse gas emission reduction and resource management.

17 - Strategy for mitigating technological, environmental, and investment risks for scale-up purposes.

18 - Energy management systems on the edge

19 - Coaxial structural batteries with innovative photosensitive coating for maximizing solar energy capture.

20 - New strategies for materials and architectures of post-lithium battery cells.

21 - New secure storage facilities and regenerative deep discharge process for obtaining high-purity products from end-of-life LiBs.
