Portugal news - Robert de Niro chooses Lisbon for his first European film festival, the Tribeca festival, that usually takes place in New York every year. The first-ever European-edition of the Tribeca Festival will be held in Lisbon on October 17-19, 2024.

While the Tribeca film festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2003, James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems bought a majority stake in Tribeca Enterprises in 2019. The yearly event usually attracts around 150,000 participants and it awards independent artists in 23 different film categories.

The international film festival, that is co-organized by Impresa, a Portuguese media group that is traded on Euronext Lisbon, and by the Lisbon City Council (CML), is hosted by New York’s film legend Robert de Niro. The main venue for Tribeca Festival Lisboa is the Beato Innovation District on the River Tagus, that is home to Lisbon’s Unicorn Factory, a cultural hub for startups, scale-ups and unicorns.

“We believe a city thrives when its artists thrive. We’re honored to partner with Impresa this fall to champion the young generation of filmmakers, artists and creators coming out of Portugal today.” stated American film producer and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, Jane Rosenthal.

The Tribeca Lisbon Festival will kick off with an opening night celebration followed by a two-day event on Lisbon’s waterfront with celebrities such as award-winning filmmaker Patty Jenkins, Whoopi Goldberg, and Oscar-nominated actor Griffin Dunne as headline speakers. The Lisbon edition will bring together artists and storytellers from across the globe and attendees can look forward to talks from some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmakers and actors.

The programming of the Tribeca Festival in Lisbon is being developed by Cara Cusumano and by Portuguese executive producer Tony Gonçalves, a former WarnerMedia executive. The film festival will include a curated collection of Portuguese and international films as well and live conversations with Portuguese and international talent, as well as networking opportunities.

Tribeca Festival Lisboa marks a significant milestone for Portugal’s burgeoning arts community since it marks the presence of the prestigious Tribeca Festival for the first time in Europe. Portugal’s main media platforms will present the Tribeca Festival Lisboa with the same innovative spirit with which it was created”:

"Tribeca Festival aligns perfectly with Lisbon's cultural ethos and policy, where we engage with our people in their neighborhoods, on the streets of Lisbon. Culture is rooted in a city’s people and events like this put it on display and bring our community together. That is the spirit of Tribeca,” highlighted Carlos Moedas, the Mayor of Lisbon.
