Royalty News Europe - The former King of Spain Juan Carlos I is emigrating to Portugal and the current King of Spain's second daughter, Princess Sofia, is also moving to Portugal:
Spain's emeritus king, Juan Carlos I, just bought a house valued at 4.5 million euros in Portugal’s Riviera, Cascais, that is part of Lisbon’s metropolitan area.

The King of Spain’s second daughter, Infanta Sofia, will also move to Portugal soon, since she will study for a year in Lisbon in 2026. The Spanish Princess will study Political Science in English at the FORWARD COLLEGE and will share the campus with young people of around 40 nationalities.

2 - Where will the former King of Spain Juan Carlos I live in Portugal?
The former King of Spain, who used to live in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, is now moving permanently to Portugal where he will maintain a low-key life and stay out of the public spotlight.
Juan Carlos I of Spain bought a house in Portugal’s Riviera, between Cascais and Estoril and he personally traveled to Cascais to oversee renovation work on his chosen mansion in early July 2025.
By moving to Portugal, the former King of Spain will be just a few hours from Galicia in Spain and will therefore be able to maintain contact with the rest of his family, specifically his daughters, the Infantas Elena and Cristina.
Former King of Spain Juan Carlos I benefits from speaking fluent Portuguese and he will be able to keep contact with his friends, connected to royalty and to the business world.
