Portugal news - The US is close to becoming Portugal’s No 1 source market for tourism since Portugal is now a favorite destination for American tourists.

Portugal has become such a popular destination for American tourists that the US is close to overtaking the United Kingdom as Portugal’s No 1 source market.

Portugal received over 1 million American tourists just for the first half of 2024. The popularity of Portugal as a destination for American tourists is confirmed by data from the Statistics office that shows a 15% increase in the number of tourists from the US for the first 6 months of 2024 compared to the same period the previous year.

For the first 6 months of 2024, Portugal received 1.2 million British tourists, that is only 119,000 more tourists than from the United States. Since the increase in the number of tourists from the UK is only of 6% compared to the same period in 2023, it is safe to assume that the USA will soon become the No. 1 market for tourists visiting Portugal.

The number of American tourists in Portugal has almost doubled in the space of two years, rising from 584,700 in the first half of 2022 to over a million tourists.

The US already ranks Number 1 market for tourism in Lisbon.

However, in terms of overnight stays, the US is Portugal’s fifth largest market with 2.35 million overnight stays in the first half of 2024, behind the UK, Germany, Spain and France.

Portugal’s tourism industry is growing steadily according to figures from the statistics office, INE, that reveals that 14.4 million tourists visited the country during the first half of 2024, that represents a 5.6% growth compared to the same period the previous year.
