The EU mobile app for age verification is being launched by the European Commission in collaboration with Member States to develop a unified age verification solution that is privacy-preserving, user-friendly, and interoperable.
Through the EU mobile app for age verification, users from European Union countries will have to prove they are old enough to access legally restricted age sites, starting with being over 18 years of age for accessing adult-restricted online content, such as pornography, gambling, alcohol, and other sensitive content.
Scytáles AB, a Swedish-based digital identity specialist, in partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG, via its subsidiary T-Systems International GmbH, were selected by the European Commission to develop this revolutionary age verification solution. The solution will seamlessly integrate with the upcoming European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) and allow citizens to verify their age online without revealing personal data.
The EU mobile app for age verification that will be launched in July 2025 is thus to be a temporary age verification solution until the EU Digital Identity Wallet is available in all EU countries by the end of 2026.
The EU Digital Identity Wallet will include measures to protect the rights and safety of children under the new EU Digital Services Act and investigations into digital platforms.
