Portugal news – A new Dinosaur species was just discovered in Portugal in the area of Cabo Espichel, that is a cape located in the district of Setúbal, south of Lisbon. Cabo Espichel, on Portugal's Atlantic coast, is part of the Lusitanian Basin; a rift basin located on both the mainland and continental shelf off the west-central coast of Portugal, that was formed between the Late Triassic and the Late Jurassic periods. The Cape, that is famous for its dinosaur fossil tracks along the Jurassic strata exposed by its cliffs, is the scene of a new fascinating discovery. Paleontologist Silvério Figueiredo and his team just published a review in ScienceDirect describing Sauropod dinosaur remains that suggest the occurrence of Titanosauriform Sauropods from the Lower Cretaceous period dated around 129 million years. However, Sauropod dinosaurs are usually giants with a long neck and tail, out of which the majority of fossils discovered belong to the Titanosaur group. The Portuguese Centre of Geohistory and Prehistory (CPGP) has stated that the group of paleontologists has discovered the remains of a new species with two vertebrae that are in anatomical connection with a small individual. This discovery seems to indicate that it is a new species of Dinosaur that is of a small size compared to the others. These dinosaurs lived in a lagoon area where different types of vertebrates used to cohabit, including crocodiles, pterosaurs, turtles, and other types of dinosaurs. Portugal Business News - ESA Space Solutions Portugal has opened applications for the Spark 4 Tech Open Call 2022, a Space Technology Transfer Feasibility Study for Portuguese companies, with proposals to be sent by November 4, 2022. Spark 4 Business already provided support to 26 Portuguese start-ups for an amount of Euros 650,000. The Space Portugal Spark 4 Tech initiative, that is located at the Instituto Pedro Nunes in Coimbra, aims at funding studies to prove the relevance of space technology for other technological fields. Each project will receive Euros 50,000 for the feasibility study that is supported by European Space Agency (ESA), by the Portuguese Space Agency and by ANACOM. Another Portugal Space investment initiative is the 24th edition of the ESA Investor Forum – “Your Business Powered by Space” - to be held in Lisbon on 31 Oct 2022. It is a high-profile event for space-related investment opportunities, connecting start-ups and scale-ups from the ESA network of international investors. The Forum will showcase Europe’s most promising start-ups using space technologies. Also in Coimbra, Portugal, the ActinSpace event will be held on 18-19 November 2022. The Portugal Space ecosystem is dynamic and diverse, from start-ups to large companies, many having proven track records in international markets. Nine Portuguese companies were present in this year’s edition of the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), one of the world’s largest space industry events. Portugal just announced an MOU with Spain for the implementation of an Atlantic Constellation. A new Space Age is dawning, with Portugal investing heavily in the final frontier so that the next generation of Space Unicorns may reach new heights. The Portugal Space Agency estimates that the financial return from the Space Industry will increase ten-fold to reach EUR 400 million. The Portuguese Aeronautics, Space and Defence sector includes more than 100 entities and is experiencing exponential growth. The sector employs over 18,500 professionals and has a turnover of EUR 1.7 billion, of which 87% is from exports. Portugal’s minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education just announced that Portugal Space is at a turning point in its history, following the signing of an MOU with Spain for launching the joint Atlantic Constellation. Very soon, Portugal will launch into space a constellation of satellites for the observation of the Earth and oceans. The aim is to provide monitoring that will help to prevent fires, to manage water resources and to monitor traffic. Portugal Ventures has highlighted the investment opportunities linked to space, providing examples such as the agreement just signed with the ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) that are part of the largest network of space incubators in Europe. Another agreement was signed with Spotlite, that is located in Coimbra. The company provides an infrastructure monitoring system based on satellite imagery to provide analytics for risk-management. Global Space Unicorns have obtained massive amounts of investment in fields such as satellite manufacturing and launching, space tourism, satellite broadband and asteroid mining. Angel investors and Venture Capital funds are now investing more and more in space technology. The Portuguese government is using resources from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) to support development projects as well as education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Web Summit provided a platform for the government to have an impact on entrepreneurship in the space sector. Space and AI can provide responses to major challenges such as climate change, while innovation is the driving force behind tech developments and business opportunities. According to Morgan Stanley, the Global Space Economy could generate revenue of more than $ 1 trillion by 2040. In the near-term, the sector will have an impact on IT hardware and telecommunications, namely for broadband access. The firm has projected that satellite broadband will represent between 50% to 70% of growth in the global Space Economy by 2040, thus driving down costs. The cost of access to Space is decreasing, with reusable rockets and the mass production of satellites set to drive down costs. The cost to launch a satellite went from $ 200 million to $ 60 million and may even drop to $ 5 million due to the advent of reusable rockets. Portuguese rocketry will benefit from this thriving business. Many business opportunities are yet to be explored, such as the delivery of packages using rocket services. Rockets may also be used to send mining equipment to extract minerals from asteroids. While the US now has a Space Force, Russia and China are pouring investments into the Space sector. The EU programme Horizon Europe is funding research and innovation to the tune of EUR 95.5 billion and is focused on an Open Science policy. The Horizon Europe programme has a budget of EUR 48.1 million to invest in Space projects. There is an ongoing Call for Proposals to be submitted by March 2023 for companies that have research proposals or innovative projects in the Space sector. Proposals are to be sent to the European Union Space Programme Agency (EUSPA). The Agency will invest in projects that provide applications for the European Global Navigation Satellite System (EGNSS) for smart mobility as well as for AI applications using Copernicus and GOVSATCOM data. Under the Horizon Europe 2021 funding, Portugal was able to obtain a total funding of EUR 875,000, thus strengthening Portugal’s global ranking in a strategic sector such as Space. Global challenges and industrial competitivity are issues that are included under the Digital, Industrial and Space cluster. This project is in line with Portugal’s National Strategy for Space 2030 that will be implemented by the Portugal Space Agency. The Atlantic Constellation of satellites is a flagship project developed by the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre) in collaboration with Mexico, the UK, Spain, Nigeria, South Africa, Norway, Egypt, Brazil and Canada. This will lead to the development of innovative applications for the Ocean, Earth, Climate and Atmosphere under Portugal’s 2030 Space Strategy which includes the Azores International Satellite Launch Programme. In the private sector, GEOSAT is the first Portuguese operator of observation satellites and is now a major EU operator. The company invested EUR 20 million for high-resolution satellite imagery. GEOSAT will allow Portugal to accelerate the transition towards a Space Industry as part of a value chain linked to the Atlantic Constellation. The Atlantic Constellation will comprise 16 small optical Earth observation satellites that will be placed in orbit by 2025. Portugal has a complete space ecosystem that is contributing to its economic growth with space-based and space-enabled services. A new generation of space-based services is expected to be developed under the EU programme. The Azores, Portugal’s autonomous region in the Atlantic, is a geostrategic asset for developments in the Space sector and has a high-growth potential. The location is used for developing a spaceport and a New Space Economy with a close collaboration between companies, universities and research institutes. This collaboration resulted in the development of a number of high-tech products for projects such as the Alphasat mission, which benefited from Multilayer Insulation (MLI) developed in Portugal. Portugal news - What is Portugal’s contribution to European Defense in 2023? In May 2022, an analysis by the European Defense Agency presented the EU recommendations to enhance the industrial and technological base of European defense. During the year 2022, Portugal invested nearly EUR 282 million in the Defense sector, with EUR 133.88 million in the air force, EUR 80.12 million in the navy and EUR 67.80 million in the army. However, with regards to defense spending, the analysis by the European Defense Agency reveals that, despite the fact that EU countries have announced increases in their defense budgets for an additional 200 billion euros in the coming years, the lack of coordination between member states would lead to fragmentation. This may be seen in the fact that, from 1999 to 2021, the EU's combined defense spending increased by 20%, against 66% for the United States, 292% for Russia and 592% for China. In April 2023, Portuguese aerospace companies signed an MOU with Brazilian defense manufacturer Embraer during the state visit of Brazilian President Lula da Silva in Portugal. The aim was to develop Portugal’s defense technological and industrial base. Portugal’s commitment was to increase the defense capabilities of the air force sector, namely for the continuous development of technologies related to Embraer’s A-29 Super Tucano, the military aircraft that is used by the air force of 15 countries, including the United States. With the recent launch of Embraer’s A-29N version, that is designed according to NATO standards, the partnership with Portuguese aerospace companies is seen as being especially relevant for EU countries. The A-29 Super Tucano aircraft can perform a wide range of missions, including light attack, surveillance, aerial interception, and counterinsurgency. However, since the aircraft needs to be built in Europe in order to meet NATO’s requirements for selling to European countries, Portugal is well positioned for contributing to European defense in the coming years. Actualités Portugal - Les orques, également connues sous le nom d’épaulards ibériques, semblent attaquer des bateaux au large des côtes du Portugal. Lundi, Phep Philouceros a été poursuivi par un groupe de cinq orques près du Cap de São Vicente au Portugal quand il a été choqué par l’intensité de l’attaque qui a détruit le gouvernail du yacht. Le marin a ensuite été forcé de diffuser une alerte de détresse Mayday qui n’est utilisée que dans des situations potentiellement mortelles. Un groupe de cinq épaulards a suivi son yacht de 30 pieds alors qu’il naviguait juste au large de la côte de São Vicente, près de l’Algarve, dans le sud du Portugal. Au cours d’une expérience terrifiante, deux des orques ont commencé à attaquer son yacht et ont détruit le gouvernail en seulement une minute. Malgré les multiples attaques près de la péninsule ibérique au cours de l’été, les orques ne sont pas considérées comme étant meurtrières. Bien que les orques appartiennent à la famille des dauphins, l’orque ibérique est une sous-population différente qui migre du détroit de Gibraltar vers le nord pendant l’été, car c’est là que le thon se déplace. Les orques se nourrissent principalement de thon rouge de l’Atlantique et la taille des adultes de la sous-espèce des orques ibériques est comprise entre 5 - 6,5 m, ce qui est bien moins comparé à d’autres orques comme celles de l’Antarctique qui atteignent jusqu’à 9 mètres. L’orque ibérique est classée en danger critique d’extinction selon la Liste rouge de l’UICN depuis 2019. Le détroit de Gibraltar est généralement l’endroit où l’on observe des épaulards s’attaquer au thon pêché par des bateaux de pêche à la palangre. Les prix des logements au Portugal suivent une forte tendance à la hausse depuis les deux dernières années et devraient augmenter de 8,2% par an selon une nouvelle étude de l’Université de Munich. La hausse de la demande étrangère au Portugal, due à son climat ensoleillé et à son environnement sécurisé, entraîne des hausses de prix supérieures à la moyenne par rapport aux autres pays d’Europe occidentale, où les hausses de prix de l’immobilier devraient être d’environ 7%. Dans d’autres pays du sud de l’Europe, la hausse des prix attendue est d’environ 10 à 15%. À l’échelle mondiale, les hausses de prix les plus élevées sont observées en Afrique orientale et en Asie australe, où elles devraient augmenter de 20 % par an.
