Portugal news - Portugal ranks 7th European country in the WEF Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 and 12th country globally.
The World Economic Forum just published the Travel & Tourism Index that covers 119 economies and measures the set of factors and policies that enable the sector’s sustainable development and contribute to the development of a country.
Portugal is ranking higher in the 2024 Travel & Tourism index and the country is expected to exceed pre-pandemic highs.
In general, the Europe and Asia-Pacific regions, and high-income economies in particular, continue to have the most favorable conditions for Travel &Tourism development. Out of the top 30 scorers in 2024, 26 are high-income countries. The vast majority of the best scorers in the Travel & Tourism industry are in Europe, namely 19 countries are in Europe, 7 are in Asia-Pacific, 3 are in the Americas and 1 is in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The top scorers in the Travel and Tourism industry have favorable business environments, open travel policies, well-developed transport, tourism, and ICT infrastructure, as well as natural, cultural and non-leisure attractions.
The top 30 countries that rank in the WEF index 2024 accounted for over 75% of the Travel &Tourism industry GDP in 2022 and 70% of GDP growth between 2020 and 2022.
Following the World Economic Forum’s multistakeholder approach, the WEF Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 is based on a research collaboration with the University of Surrey.
