Portugal news – Portugal’s tourism sector is booming, and the country received 19% more tourists in 2023, to reach a total of 26.5 million tourists.

 

Portugal’s tourism sector in 2023 did even better that during pre-pandemic highs, with +7.7% more tourists than in 2019.

Portugal’s main inbound tourism market is Spain, with a share of 25.2%, having registered a 16.7% growth in 2023 compared to the previous year.

 

The total number of inbound tourists in Portugal in 2023 reached 32.5 million guests, which provided 85.1 million overnight stays, corresponding to variations of +12.5% and +10.3% respectively, figures that reflect an average annual growth of 2.4% and 2.3%.

  

The seasonality rate for inbound tourism in Portugal in 2023 fell to 36.9% and reached its lowest value since 2013. This indicator was higher for residents with 41.3% than for non-residents with 34.8%.

 

 

What is the growth of tourist arrivals in Portugal by region?

 

Figures for the number of tourists by region in Portugal show that all regions recorded increases in the number of overnight stays in 2023, with the West & Vale do Tejo region registering +18.2%, the North registering +14.0%, and the Lisbon metropolitan region registering +11.8%, being the regions with the highest growth in tourism figures. 

 

The Algarve registered an increase in number of tourists of +6.7%, and Central Portugal registered +6.9%, that are the less significant increases in tourism figures in Portugal. Compared to 2019, tourist arrivals in the Algarve and Setúbal did not reach pre-pandemic levels with overnight stays being -1.5% and -0.9% respectively.
