The former King of Spain, who used to live in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, is now moving permanently to Portugal where he will maintain a low-key life and stay out of the public spotlight.   Juan Carlos I of Spain bought a house in Portugal’s Riviera,   between Cascais and Estoril and he personally traveled to Cascais to oversee renovation work on his chosen mansion in early July 2025.   By moving to Portugal, the former King of Spain will be just a few hours from Galicia in Spain and will therefore be able to maintain contact with the rest of his family, specifically his daughters, the Infantas Elena and Cristina.   Former King of Spain Juan Carlos I benefits from speaking fluent Portuguese and he will be able to keep contact with his friends, connected to royalty and to the business world.
